Electric Power from Onion!

Onion plays an important role in our day to day life. No food is complete without the flavor and taste of onion. Onion has medicinal properties too.

A new application has brought onion to the lime light. Yes, it is instrumental in the generation of electricity!

35% to 40% of onion constitutes its head, tail and skin and the rest of the meat portion only is utilized for food preparation. A premier firm in USA engaged in processing onion disposed the waste to the fields as compost. Subsequently onion juice was extracted from the waste. Bacteria produces methane gas with onion juice which is rich in sugar. The huge quantum of methane gas thus produced is utilized in driving gas turbines to generate electricity. The firm produces electricity to the tune of 300 to 400 kilowatts sufficient to light up a mini township.

Electricity produced by onion juice fuel is environment friendly as it minimizes greenhouse emission.

Moral of this article - onion generates not only tears from the eyes but also electric power!
