The sad story of Jacintha Saldanha

Jacintha Saldanha,46, was a nurse at King Edward VII Hospital in London, UK.  She, unsuspectingly, furnished the medical details of Kate Middleton, wife of Prince Williams, after receiving a hoax radio call from two Australian RJs, who impersonated Queen Elizabeth and Price Charles, to get information and share a few laughs.  They boasted about their "achievements" on the radio and garnered the world's attention.  Saldanha, who was extremely sensitive, righteous and soft spoken, could not handle being the center of the joke that made the whole world laugh at her mistake.  The fact that she let the hospital down pricked her conscience badly.  The mother of two killed herself just three days after the hoax call story was made public.  The media blitzkrieg and the public outcry forced the two RJs to apologize publicly, but what can explain their cruel intentions to share a good laugh over some one's mistake and then brag about it without thinking about the consequences.

Humiliation for the sake of entertainment appears to be order of the day.  When the consequences are  severe - even fatal - it is time to ask whether the current culture of cruelty has gone too far.

May be the poor nurse was not fit for our present day culture.  Her body was flown to Mumbai, India, for performing last rites by her husband and two young daughters.

  1. Our current culture of cruelty has gone way, way too far. Being rude and heartless is the mantra for many anymore. It's a shame.

    Have a terrific day. :)
